Hello and welcome back to the year 6 blog.

We’ve been back in school for a number of weeks now and have been working really hard. We have worked on gothic horror and written poems in Literacy as well as the four main operations, data handling and some measure in Numeracy.

Our topic this term is Summer Camp and we have done lots of work on the National parks of Wales and the UK. We love working independently in ‘Missions’ and sir is really proud of us.

We have loved playing cricket and kick rounders in Fitness Friday and can’t wait to go swimming over the next two weeks 🙂

Check in next week to see how it goes!

Croeso nol

This week has been all about Science and Christmas.

We have practised really hard for our Christmas DVD recording and on Tuesday it was show time! We sang two songs and performed the nativity through verse. Everyone who saw the recording was blown away by our performances. The DVD is a MUST BUY!

In Science we have carried on our work on reversible and irreversible changes. We carried out a burning investigation which was lots of fun and Mr Hazel still has his eyebrows (which is a bonus!) We have learnt about the fire triangle and are going to do another investigation next week.

In maths we have continued our work on long multiplication. Although it’s tricky some of us love it!

Same time next week 🙂

Shwmae Pawb 🙂

This week Christmas really has come early in Year 6! We have been practising like worker ants to get ready for next weeks big DVD recording session. We all have a verse to read during the performance and sing two songs: one traditional Christmas song and a surprise Christmas pop classic! We are very excited about it!

Along side that we have started our Science investigation. We are studying states of matter and reversible and irreversible changes. It’s very interesting and next week we get to melt, burn, cook and freeze things. It’s going to be awesome.

In English we have started to innovate our stories based on Cobbler and the Dragon. While in Maths we are smashing short and long multiplication.

Today nearly all of us are wearing something pink (or a bright colour) in support of Breast Cancer awareness. Thank you for your support.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to updating you this time next week.

Happy Friday 13th

This week has been another excellent but very busy week. We’ve recorded a very special assembly for Armistice day and shared it with the rest of the school and parents through Hwb. If you haven’t seen it check it out in the shared files on J2E. Mr Hazel said we were amazing and he is the proudest teacher in Wales!

We have also been story mapping our narrative story ‘Cobbler and the Dragon’ in English this week as well as subtracting decimals and working on our topic based missions. We love working on missions and are becoming more and more independent in our learning. We are so amazing some of the other teachers are coming to watch us next week. Mr Hazel is the proudest teacher in Britain!

Today is Children In Need day. We all look amazing in our non-uniform gear and have had some fun with our activities. We also had a very interesting Teams Q&A session with Mr Jeremy Miles MS this morning. We grilled him on issues such as Covid-19, education, healthcare,  environment and global politics. It lasted an hour and Mr Hazel was the proudest teacher in Europe!

Check out our blog this time next week when we aim to make Mr Hazel the proudest teacher in the Solar System!

Hello again 🙂

Yesterday was a very exciting day in Alltwen Primary School… PHOTO DAY! Our new head boy and girl and deputies got to do their first job by helping organise the photos. Well done you four! EVEN MORE EXCITING NEWS… We received our leavers hoodies. We LOVE them!!

In English we are coming to the end of writing our dragon non-chronological reports. Sir says they are brilliant and he is very proud of us! Some of our favourite paragraphs are ‘How dangerous are they?’ and ‘Modern Culture’.

In Maths we have been converting grams to kilograms during our measurement unit. We are also doing superbly in our ‘Big Maths Beat That’ tests – sir says he couldn’t be more proud!

We have also completed our first missions planning. We really enjoy using the missions and love the independence we get when working that way. We have planned a write, budgeted for building a roundhouse and even planned a Celtic village.

It’s nearly time for fitness Friday now. We are supper excited to get to have Rugby sessions with Becca from the Ospreys!

Catch you next week

Year 6

Friday 9th October, 2020

Croeso nol! Welcome back to the year 6 blog. I can’t believe it’s been a week since we appointed our head boy and girl. They have made a great start to the job and are enjoying it!

In English this week. We have continued our work on non-chronological reports. We have written our overview and started to perfect the appearance section. We loved naming our Dragons. We have also done a Harry potter comprehension task and worked on our spellings everyday in handwriting.

In maths this week it has been all about algebra and BDMAS. We have worked SO hard on this and have cracked it even though its really tricky stuff. Especially BDMAS because it doesn’t follow the normal order of a sum.

However, this week, has been all about starting our missions in topic work. Missions are all about developing our independence. Mr Hazel mostly works with a ‘Major’ group and gives a small amount of time to a ‘Minor group’ while the third group works independently on missions. We do this 3 afternoons a week and we all have 1 session in each group. This is a huge change for us but we have all enjoyed our mission sessions. We’ve made a great start but soon we will have perfected it.

Mr Hazel told us how proud he was of us this week when he noticed all of us playing together during playtimes and making sure nobody felt left out.

Today in ‘Fitness Friday’ we are going to start a Dance module. We can’t wait to see Mr Hazel’s moves!! We hope he wears a pink TUTU 🙂

Come back next week for another weekly blog from year 6.

Hello and Croeso i Blwyddyn 6!

It’s been a great start to life in year 6. Lovely to see all our friends again and get back to learning!

In English we are writing non-chronological reports. We read a non-chron about Werewolves and have began to write our own about Dragons. We started by designing our own Dragons. That was awesome and fun. We labelled the picture to create a diagram. So far we have written the overview.

In Maths, this week, we have been learning all about Algebra. This is tricky! All of a sudden sums have got letters in them. Luckily, it’s not as complicated as it sounds. In fact we have really enjoyed it. Trial and error helps. We have also loved starting Big Maths: Beat That!

It was a big week for year 6. We have a new head boy/girl and new deputies. Congratulations Gabriel, Sophia and Aiden and Madison!!

It’s also a very sad day because Jason is moving to London and leaving us. All the best in your new school Jase and stay in touch.

It’s time for Fitness Friday now. So we’ll catch you next week!

Welcome back to the year 4 blog!

Every week we seem to have exciting news to tell you. This week we have most enjoyed beginning to make our paper mache planets during our mission time. It is a messy job but we LOVE it! Today has been sports relief and we have run our socks off and showed we have the skills to pay the bills!

In literacy Mrs Lloyd came in to teach with Mr Hazel on Wednesday. We did an oracy lesson all about washing our hands. We are going to teach the reception children how to do it properly! In maths we have had another tricky week learning about fractions of a set and equivalent fractions.

Tune in the same time next week for more news!
